Sea Life Squid

Updated: Jun 15, 2022

Difficulty: Intermediate ✦✦✧✧✧

Here is a relatively simple free baby squid amigurumi crochet pattern as part of my Sea Life Mobile project.

With a baby on the way, I am excited to make him all the things. One of the first things I set out to make was a mobile for over his crib and changing table. Here is the second animal for my sea life baby mobile: a cute little squid!

This little squid is made in 3 parts: the body, the tentacles, and the swimming fins. It is stitched in Knit Picks Mighty Stitch in Serrano, with a 4mm hook. Gauge is not important. A larger hook and thicker yarn will result in a larger amigurumi.

My squid's body is 3 inches long (5.5 inches with the tentacles) and 1.5 inches at its widest point.

Body:

Row 1:  6 sc in a magic ring. Row 2:  [2 sc in next st, sc] repeat 3 times. (9 sts) Row 3:  [2 sc in next st, sc 2] repeat 3 times. (12 sts) Row 4:  sc in each st around. (12 sts) Row 5:  [2 sc in next st, sc 3] repeat 3 times. (15 sts) Row 6:  sc in each st around. (15 sts) Row 7:  [2 sc in next st, sc 3] repeat 5 times. (20 sts) Rows 8-11:  sc in each st around. (20 sts) Row 12:  [sc2tog, sc3tog] repeat 4 times. (8 sts)     Stuff. Row 13:  2 sc in each st around. (16 sts) Rows 14-16:  sc in each st around. (16 sts)

Row 17a: In the back loops only: sc2tog around. (8 sts)

Stuff.

Row 18a:  sc2tog, ch 16, skip 1 ch, (sl st, sc) in the next ch, sc in the next ch, sl st 13 back along the chain, sc2tog twice, ch 16, skip 1 ch, (sl st, sc) in the next ch, sc in the next ch, sl st 13 back along the chain, sc2tog, sl st.      Tie off.

Row 1:  sc 5 down the side of the head, sl st. Turn. Row 2:  Ch, skip sl st, sc 4, sl st in last sc. Turn. Row 3:  Ch, skip sl st, sc 2, sl st.      Tie off.
