Peacock Petals Shawl

Here is a free crochet pattern for a Peacock Petals Shawl that drapes over your shoulders.

For my birthday this year, I splurged on some gorgeous gradient yarn from Melodyy by Wolltraum. One of the yarns in particular had this beautiful gradient from orange to pink making me think of flowers like dahlias and daisies. So, I set out to create a shawl that looked like a flower with its expanding petals. In the end, my "petals" look more like peacock feathers, but I love it anyways!

I am not a fan of shawls with a straight top edge because I can never figure out how to wear them without the shawl bunching up around my neck. This free crochet shawl pattern is shaped to sit nicely on the shoulders without falling off.

For this shawl, I used just under 950m (250g) of 4-ply fingering weight yarn (Wolltraum in the Flower colorway) and a 4mm (G) hook.

My shawl measures 25 inches wide from the center to the point (from orange to pink) and 52 inches long from tip to tip.

This shawl will look best when made with a fingering or sport weight yarn and a 4mm or 5mm hook, respectively.

Gauge:

11 stitches in 5 rows of double crochet makes a 2-inch square.

• Gauge is only important if you are going to use the same gradient yarn since you want the color changes to match up. I finished with about 7.5m (2g) of yarn from a 950m cake.

Note:

When I write "repeat XX times", I intend for you to stitch the sequence in the parentheses or brackets XX times.

• For instance, "(ch 3, sc) repeat 3 times" means stitch "ch 3, sc" a total of 3 times (i.e. stitch ch 3, sc, ch 3, sc, ch 3, sc).

Note: when stitching the last stitch of a row into the turning chain (ch 3), make sure to stitch into the 3rd chain, not around it. This pulls the turning chain tight and prevents a hole from appearing.

Blocking

Either steam block or wet block depending on the fiber content (acrylic or natural, respectively) of the yarn you are using.

Find something round (I used a 9-inch dinner plate) and use it to pin the curvature for the ch-3 netting section, then stretch the arms straight and pin. Continue to pin around, pulling out from the center ch-2 space between each petal, ensuring that each petal in a row is about the same size and shape.
