Sea Life Octopus

Updated: Jun 15, 2022

Difficulty: Intermediate ✦✦✧✧✧

Here is a relatively simple free baby octopus amigurumi crochet pattern as part of my Sea Life Mobile project.

With a baby on the way, I am excited to make him all the things. One of the first things I set out to make (after the baby blanket, of course!) was a mobile for over his crib and changing table.

Now, I love marine life so I decided to make a sea-themed mobile! Here is the first of many patterns for tiny amigurumi animals that will hang from his mobile.

I decided to start with an octopus!

This cute little octopus is made in 2 parts: the body and the legs. It is stitched in Knit Picks Mighty Stitch in Silver, with a 4mm hook. Gauge is not important. A larger hook and thicker yarn will result in a larger amigurumi.     My octopus's body is 2.5 inches long (4 inches with the legs) and 1.75 inches at its widest point.

Body:

Row 1:  6 sc in a magic ring. Row 2:  2 sc in each st. (12 sts) Row 3:  [sc, 2 sc in next st] repeat 6 times. (18 sts) Row 4:  [sc 2, 2 sc in next st] repeat 6 times. (24 sts) Rows 5-10:  sc in each st around. (24 sts) Row 11:  [sc2tog, sc 2] repeat 6 times. (18 sts) Rows 12-13:  sc in each st around. (18 sts) Row 14:  [sc2tog, sc 4] repeat 3 times. (15 sts) Row 15: In the back loops only: [sc, sc2tog] repeat 5 times. (10 sts)     Stuff. Row 16a:  sc2tog around until closed (about 2 rounds). sl st to join.      Tie off.

Legs:

Row 16b:  Join in the front loops of Row 15. sc in each st around. (15 sts) Row 17:  [2 sc in the next st, sc 2] repeat 4 times. (20 sts) Row 18:  [sc, ch 9, skip 1 ch, sl st 8 back along the chain, sc, 2 sc in next st, ch 9, skip 1 ch, sl st 8 back along the chain, sc 2] repeat 4 times, sl st to join.      Tie off. Weave ends in.

Here are the Patterns for my other "Sea Life" Animals:

From left to right, Top row: blue Chromis, Squid, and yellow Tang.

Bottom row: Ochre Sea Stars, Octopus, and the Jellies.
