Lately, I have been wanting a solid shawl or wrap to keep warm on cool late summer and early autumn nights. I set out to design a wrap that had some decoration within it but fewer holes than most lace wraps out there.
For some time, I have been playing around with the idea of embedding the pineapple motif in a solid block of double crochets. After a bit of trial and error, I came up with a great design that seems to work without distorting the fabric around it. Then, I set out to design a way to have pineapple motifs dangling from the edge of the wrap without being tethered to the neighboring pineapple. I hope you will be as please as I am with the result. I think this would look splendid with beads in each of the pineapples to give them weight and sparkle.
This wrap is made in two parts: the body and the edging.
This pattern uses a 5mm hook and about 600 yards of fingering weight or sock yarn (I used Malabrigo sock yarn). I have chosen to go up a couple of hook sizes from what is recommended for the yarn in order to get the drape that I want. After blocking, my finished shawl is 66 inches long and 11 inches at its widest, ignoring the edging.
Gauge:
7 double crochet in 6 rows makes a 2 inch (5 cm) square. Though I give measurements above, gauge is not important for this pattern.
Use a larger hook than recommended for your yarn to achieve the right drape. I went up 2 sizes (5mm for fingering weight yarn).
I also use a larger hook (5.5mm) for my starting chain in order to ensure that it is not too tight.
