Mother's Day is coming up, and to celebrate I am working on a series of flower for the mothers in my life. My first free flower crochet pattern is dogwood for my best friend who is a mother to two of the most adorable little girls ever (no, I'm not biased or anything...).
The flowers have about a 2.5 inch diameter when made with fingering weight cotton yarn and a 2mm hook. The leaves are about 3 inches long and 1.5 inches wide.
Special Stitches: Double Treble Crochet (dtc) = Yarn over 3 times and then proceed like a treble crochet with one extra round of loops on the hook. Spike Single Crochet (spike sc) = Single crochet into a stitch several rows below the working row, pulling the yarn up without tightening it so that the loops are stretched over the previous row(s).
Dogwood Flower:
In light green:
Row 1: 8 sc in a magic circle.
In White:
Row 2: In the back loops only, [sc, ch 3, sc] repeat 4 times, sl st with the first st.
Row 3: [Sc, ch, dc, tc, ch 2, tc, dc, ch, sc] in each ch-3 loop around.
Row 4: [Sl st in the first sc of the next petal, sc in ch-space, dc 2, (2 tc, ch, dc, ch, 2 tc) in the ch-2 space, dc 2, sc in the ch-space, sl st in the last sc of the petal] repeat 4 times around.

Row 5: [Skip the sl sts between petals. Sl st 2, sc, 2 sc in the next st, (sc, hdc) in the next st, (hdc, dc, hdc) in the ch-space, ch, sl st, ch, (hdc, dc, hdc) in the ch-space, (sc, hdc) in the next st, 2 sc in the next st, sc, sl st 2, spike sc in between the 2 sc from Row 2] repeat 4 times around, sl st with the next st).

Tie off. Weave ends in.
In light green:
Row 6: Join in a front loop of the center ring. Sc 8, sl st.
Tie off. Weave ends in.

Dogwood Leaf:
Row 1: Ch 16.
Row 2: Skip first st, sc 11, sl st. Leave 3 ch unworked. This forms the stem.
Row 3: Ch 3. Starting with the first sc of the stem, tc 2, dtc 4, tc 4, (tc 2, ch, dtc 2, ch, tc 2) in the last sc.
Row 4: Working down the other side of the starting chain, tc 4, dtc 4, tc 2, ch 3, sl st into the stem, sl st 3 to the tip of the stem.
Row 5: Ch, sl st 3 along the other side of the stem, sc 3 around the ch-3, sc 2, 2 sc in the first dtc, sc 2, 2 sc in the last dtc, sc 7 (including the ch-space), (sc, hdc) in the first dtc, picot, (hdc, sc) in the second dtc, sc 7 (including the ch-space), 2 sc in the next st, sc 2, 2 sc in the next st, sc 2, sc 3 along ch, sl st.
Tie off. Weave ends in.
