Until this week, summer here in Denmark has been rather cool, much colder than I am used to from California. I started making this shawl when the weather started to turn nice, but evenings were still too cool to wear sleeveless tops and dresses.
The pattern is based off the stained glass window in the council chambers of the Buffalo City Hall in New York. I have always been drawn to the geometric representations of nature in art deco designs. The sunburst of this stained glass window seemed like the perfect inspiration to adapt into a crochet design.
The shawl was made with about 800m of a fingering weight yarn and a 3.5 (E) mm hook. After blocking, it measures about 56 inches long and 28 inches wide.
Special Stitches:
Hdc2tog: Yarn over (YO), insert your hook in the first st and pull up a loop, insert your hook in the second st and pull up a loop, pull a loop through all 4 loops on the hook.
Inv-Tc2tog: (invisible treble decrease) YO twice, insert your hook in the first st and pull up a loop, insert your hook in the second st and pull up a loop, pull a loop through 3 loops on the hook, then pull a loop through 2 loops on the hook twice to finish the stitch.
Cluster(sts) = stitch the indicated stitches in the parentheses, keeping the last loop on the hook until all stitches are complete, then yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook.
Sometimes the stitches to cluster are not adjacent and are noted in the pattern (for example: "cluster(2 tc) over the next 2 ch-spaces"means to stitch a tc in each of the next two ch-sps, keeping the last loop on the hook, then yarn over and pull through both loops).
Fan: (dc, ch, tc, ch, dtc, ch, tc, ch, dc) in the next stitch.
This pattern was extensively corrected on June 1, 2018.

Blocking:
Block the shawl by stretching it starting at the center and slowly working outwards. Each section should make a semi-circle. I use a measuring tape to keep the shawl symmetric. Finish by stretching out the points created in the last row before the border.
