A Different Ripple Blanket

Intermediate ✦✦✧✧✧

Here is a free crochet pattern for a twist on the classic ripple blanket to give it some movement.

I have always wanted to make a ripple blanket. However, I've never attempted one because I get easily bored of simple repetitious patterns. When I set out to make a larger blanket for me and my son to cuddle with, and that can soon transition to his toddler blanket, I knew I needed to come up with a different variation of a standard ripple.

So I created this variant of a ripple with short peaks within valleys and small valleys within peaks to keep it interesting.

I used a 6mm hook with light worsted weight yarn (Knit Picks Mighty Stitch). With 2 repeats of the pattern, my blanket measures about 32 inches by 48 inches. I used about 1 skein (200 yds) of each color.

Gauge:

8 stitches in 6 rows makes a 2 inch square.       (Gauge is not important as this blanket can be adapted to any size.)

Special Stitch: hdc2tog: YO, insert your hook in the first stitch and pull up a loop. Pull a loop through 2 loops on the hook. YO, insert your hook in the second stitch and pull up a loop. Pull a loop through all 4 loops on the hook.

Pattern:

Row 1:  chain a multiple of 52 + 37 sts

Row 2:  ch, hdc2tog, hdc 10, [(hdc, ch, hdc) in the next st, hdc 4, hdc2tog over the next and 3rd st from the hook (skipping the 2nd st from the hook), hdc 4, (hdc, ch, hdc) in the next st, hdc 12, hdc2tog over the next and 3rd st from the hook, hdc 4, (hdc, ch, hdc) in the next st, hdc 4, hdc2tog over the next and 3rd st from the hook, hdc 12] repeat across, (hdc, ch, hdc) in the next st, hdc 4, hdc2tog over the next and 3rd st from the hook, hdc 4, (hdc, ch, hdc) in the next st, hdc 10, hdc2tog. Turn.

Repeat the last row until the blanket is the length you want.
